The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
