Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
